Fisher Building Engagement Session | Deirdre & Stan

Fisher Building Engagement Session | Deirdre & Stan

When I first met Deirdre over zoom for a wedding consultation, I just knew that I had to be a part of her and Stan’s wedding day and engagement photos. Not only are these two such sweet people, but their sense of style is impeccable. They are fire in front of the camera, truly! Their Fisher Building engagement session was really quite perfect for March – half inside, half outside, with honestly the perfect golden hour light. I can’t believe how lucky I got with sunsets last March!

I shot this Fisher Building engagement session at 34 weeks pregnant and it was my last session before maternity leave. What a bang! Deirdre asked me to really incorporate architecture and art into their images, so I really feel like I stretched myself a little bit more than I usually do, erring more editorial than photojournalistic. I like to think I come out somewhere in the middle of it all – a good balance of everything.

The Fisher Building is perhaps the most beautiful building in Detroit. If you happen to be able to get on a tour of it, I highly recommend it. It is so cool and worth the time. There are actual offices, businesses, and a theater in the building, but the lobby area is absolutely gorgeous. And as of right now one of the few places in the city where you can still go inside and take portraits without much trouble, making a Fisher Building engagement session so perfect for those colder months. See wedding portraits I did there back in 2019 here.

For the second half of the session, we headed over to the Detroit Public Library to use the exterior of the building. It’s actually another one of my favorite spots in the city – very underrated but still sophisticated like the DIA across the street and WAY less busy. I think this location suited them well – scroll down to see!

I can’t wait to share their October 2021 wedding – it was absolutely stunning!

Winter Eastern Market Engagement Session | Marisa & Ethan

Winter Eastern Market Engagement Session | Marisa & Ethan

I’m catching up on sharing all of my wonderful 2021 clients’ sessions and weddings, and I have to kick it off with this winter Eastern Market engagement session with Marisa and Ethan. We had to reschedule a few times before we got to finally get this session in – thanks winter weather! But it turned out absolutely lovely.

The great part about a winter Eastern Market engagement session is that you have the entire market to YOURSELVES. And Eastern Market really doesn’t photograph poorly in any season – there are so many colors and textures to use. I highly recommend using Eastern Market for your Detroit engagement session as it’s always changing.

Marisa was the maid of honor in a February 2020 wedding and I was so happy when she contacted me after right after she and Ethan got engaged. Their October 2021 Henry Ford Museum wedding was absolutely gorgeous – more on that later!

And they have the loveliest backstory/love story. Ethan and Marisa actually met when they were in middle school. They went separate paths in high school attending different schools, but during sophomore year of college, they had a chance to reconnect. While Marisa was out at a house party one night, she opened Snapchat and saw him as a suggested friend to add. She did it. Ethan later told Marisa how psyched he was because apparently he had liked her A LOT back in middle school.

Not even planned, their first date was on Valentine’s Day to Dearborn Music and then Ram’s Horn. They describe that there was something about that night that felt different than any other date they had been on – there was a sense of magic to it. Marisa says she knew on our second date that she wanted to spend the rest of my life with Ethan. And five years later, they were getting married!!

Marisa and Ethan are just fun to be around. They make each other so happy and you can tell. They literally don’t stop laughing! They enjoy vintage shopping, long walks, bike rides, hanging out with friends, watching funny YouTube videos and true crime documentaries, and hiking.

Michigan State University Engagement Photos | Jennifer & Robert

Michigan State University Engagement Photos | Jennifer & Robert

Who doesn’t like Michigan State University engagement photos? It seems like every year I end up in both East Lansing and Ann Arbor for at least one session with some alums! 2020 was no different with Jennifer and Robert at Michigan State University in the fall.

We got lucky with this session – it looked like rain but it held off, just a few sprinkles! These two are super sweet and just overall happy to be together. I loved getting to know them and their story as we walked around campus.

No Michigan State University engagement photos are complete without some in front of Beaumont Tower. Of all the campuses I’ve been on, MSU is one of my favorites to shoot! It’s just so pretty in every season. Just walking around, you’re bound to find something beautiful!

Eastern Market Engagement Session | Jordan & Nathan

Eastern Market Engagement Session | Jordan & Nathan

I love when couples want to incorporate locations that are meaningful to them into their sessions, and I highly encourage it! Jordan and Nathan’s Eastern Market engagement session did exactly that. Their church, St. Joseph Shrine, is very important to them, so we decided to use it as our main backdrop.

St. Joseph Shrine is a historic church located in Eastern Market in Detroit. The church dates back to 1855 and has absolutely gorgeous architecture. I love the doorways and old stone so I tried to incorporate that during our session.

We decided to head over to Gratiot for a few city shots as well. I love that rainbow brick wall! It’s one of my favorite spots in the area.

Jordan and Nathan are so sweet! I loved hanging out with them and getting to know them. Also doesn’t Jordan’s makeup look amazing? The incredible Rosa Alcantara did it!! I highly recommend Rosa!

We actually shot this session in the middle of the day which can be really scary for some photographers! I embraced the light on this one, and though it’s not golden hour, we were able to use some direct sunlight, make use of shade of buildings (which is honestly key and why you can always shoot at just about any time in the city) which helped. I usually prefer morning or evening to give clients that glow look that they see in my images, but sometimes with scheduling it’s not possible so we make due!

I’m so glad they found me and I was able to not only work with them on their Eastern Market engagement session, but their intimate October wedding! Stay tuned for the gorgeous images from that day!

Sunset Stony Creek Engagement Session | Lauren & Seth

Sunset Stony Creek Engagement Session | Lauren & Seth

Lauren and Seth love the outdoors so a sunset Stony Creek engagement session was perfect for them! The first time we scheduled their engagement session, the weather forecast was cloudy, but still fine for photos. However, after shooting for about thirty minutes, it started to RAIN! Out of nowhere, with 20 percent chance on the forecast! So we decided to postpone the session and try again in a week or so. Good thing because we got the most incredible sunset for their session!

A sunset Stony Creek engagement session is perfect for summer engagements. Here’s another summer Stony Creek engagement session in case you’re curious. The large fields and pine covered trail at Stony Creek is a beautiful backdrop in any season, but in summer, it just feels so lush and green. It’s a popular spot for photos for a reason.

Lauren and Seth are two of the most welcoming people I’ve met while in business. They asked me so many good questions about my work and myself, and I got to know their story too. After bonding over our shared love of food and beverages, we shared some food recommendations (they are newer to the area but still shared options I hadn’t heard of). They wanted to have some celebratory fun so we popped some champagne at their session. Highly recommend because those photos are always so fun to have and edit!

Our session ended at Yates Cider Mill for ice cream, as requested by these two. Ice cream is always a good way to end a summer session, especially a sunset Stony Creek engagement session.

Downtown Utica Engagement Session | Angela & Michael

Downtown Utica Engagement Session | Angela & Michael

We had the most gorgeous summer evening for Angela and Michael’s downtown Utica engagement session! These two had to reschedule their June 2020 wedding AND their wedding shower, so they opted to celebrate their engagement and had me out to Downtown Utica, Michigan where they live!

There are a few things I always advise my engagement session clients to do. The first is to pick a place that is special to them if possible. This isn’t always possible so if you can’t pick a special spot or you don’t have one, then pick a spot that vibes with your relationship. The second is to always bring your dog along (see another dog friendly session here). Maggie May was such a good pup for the camera!

I’d never done a downtown Utica engagement session before, but the best part was that everything was pretty close and we just walked from place to place. We got so lucky with the August golden hour (summer golden hours really can’t be beat!) and downtown Utica has a lot to offer for an engagement session. Back alleys, a nice little riverside park, a bridge. It’s really all there! I love exploring new places when shooting – it keeps me on my toes and forces me to continue to be creative.

Angela and Michael, like Maggie May, are super sweet. So easy to talk to and full of life and laughter – I’ve enjoyed getting to know them more throughout our planning process, and am so glad we were able to get in an engagement session!

Can’t wait to celebrate these two (fingers crossed) in June 2021! They’ve been waiting a long time and I know it’ll be worth it!
